when do you know it's time to start with an allowance?

I really am lucky cuz WJ has always been a good helper. Only problem is I feel like I have to ask, or demand depending on the situation, most of the time - and it's getting really, really old. I think the problem is there isn't any motivation for him to do things without being told.

Since he goes to a Catholic school, they are learning about Lent. Last week a homework assignment came home from the religion teacher. They were to come up with an activity that they could do, on their own, without having to be told to do so. This is so different from when I was growing up and we had to give something up for the Lenten season, but whatever works. Problem is, it's not working. WJ chose to feed the dog morning and night without me having to remind him. So far, this morning is the only time he's done it without coaxing.

This all got me to thinking about an allowance. I can't remember how old I was when I first started getting an allowance for doing chores, but I'm thinking it might give him some motivation to get things done around here. And I could certainly use the help!

How old were you when you started getting an allowance? Or started giving your kids an allowance? And how much are chores worth these days? I'm sure the price is staggeringly higher than when I was a kid... in the dark ages.

To hell with an allowance...you either do what I ask you or You don't get what you already have....Mine must have 100,000 legos, pc, xbox, etc....He want's money? As If....Ask Grandma

Shit I remember when I would get $.03 for sweeping the kitchen floor. Yes, I just effin gave up. Was more fun to do nothing and watch the bitching commence....Yes Mom I understand I won't get the $.21 this week for sweeping the kitchen everyday. F Me I'd find more change in 20 minutes flipping through Payphones....sheesh...

HEHE! For $.03 I'd give up too. That's pitiful!!

And thanks for nothing. As you already know, my kid doesn't have a pc, xbox, etc. (At least not at MY freakin' house!)

Oh I know that was a little off....I'm to the point that there is NO respect or idea of wanting for anything and everytime I take something away it reverts to the next cool thing....I'd have to take it ALL away to make progress.....

I never got an allowance.

I think its normal for kids to not think to do things. My suggestion is to help him make a chart of chores and then he can see what he needs done.

Just throwing that out there. But I'm not experienced with that, so take it with a grain of salt.

I never did get any allowance either. I use to save my lunch money and use that for alcohol and hookers.

Just kidding, I was too young to drink.

But not hookers.....

i think i got an allowance? i had my first "job" at 13 and made my own money. sure, it was in the parrish office but still, my money. i remember getting some money once a month for helping around the house.

i don't think i could afford kids- for many reasons- but then throw in the allowance and i'm broke! :)
